On February 19, Eric Dane, a talented actor known especially for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, tragically died from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) at just 53. His death came just one year after his diagnosis after heartbreakingly struggling with, advocating against, and fighting the disease. Through his memorable television appearances and openness about ALS, Dane has had such a lasting impact on his fans and has helped bring awareness to the disease itself.
Dane was born on November 9, 1972 in San Francisco, California and raised mainly by his mother, Leah Dane, after his father was fatally shot at just seven years old. Dane unexpectedly discovered a passion for acting in high school, when he dropped out right before graduation to follow his dreams, moving to Los Angeles with very little money. There, he went on to have small roles in a few television films and shows.
Dane rose to fame in 2006 when he landed the role of Dr. Mark Sloan (McSteamy) in Grey’s Anatomy, an ABC medical drama series, who he would continue to play for the next six years until 2012. Around eight years later, he was cast as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, an HBO teen drama series. Then, in April of 2025, Dane revealed his diagnosis of ALS.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a nervous system disease that causes the loss of muscle control. In most cases, it occurs randomly without any family history. Progressively, muscle control loss worsens and there is currently no cure. Dane began experiencing symptoms of ALS in late 2023 to early 2024. After struggling with finding answers for nine months, he finally received a formal diagnosis of ALS. Since his diagnosis, Dane had been proudly advocating for ALS awareness and research, with complete support from his former wife Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. Tragically, Dane passed away on February 19 of 2026 from respiratory failure due to ALS. He was surrounded in love and support until his last breath.
Although Dane’s life was sadly cut short, he will never be forgotten. Through his memorable roles in television and openness about his experience with ALS, Dane touched the lives of many people around the world. His bravery in speaking up about the disease has helped raise awareness and encouraged support for research toward a cure. Beyond his success as an actor, he will also be remembered for his strength, determination, and dedication to helping others understand ALS. Eric Dane’s legacy lives on through his work, his advocacy, and the lasting influence he had on those who admired and supported him.
