Somerville High School students showcase various styles and trends which reflect their diverse personalities and interests. Style is forever changing, from casual to elegant, and I’ve noticed that certain outdated pieces from the early 2000s are coming back in 2025.
Flare pants are reemerging, every day I see at least 15 people wearing them. Bell bottoms, better known as flares, dominated the men’s and women’s fashion world during the late 1970s. Many people today own bell bottoms because they give a flattering silhouette. Today, flares are considered as part of both the boho and Y2K styles.

Chunky gold jewelry started its uproar during the 1990’s. Today, many people customize their jewelry stack so it’s unique to them. According to Ava Cassilo, a freshman at SHS, “Jewelry pulls the whole outfit together. You can’t go without wearing it.” Everywhere you go there is a store selling gold jewelry. And who doesn’t love a statement necklace?
Most people currently have Birkenstocks in their closets. These slip-on shoes with two buckles on the strap are coming back as a 2025 summer staple. Look out for them as the weather gets warmer!

Famous for their influential tall boots, UGG is making a comeback in a mini-way. They originally gained popularity during the 2010s. “UGG boots remain popular due to their comfort, warmth, and versatility,” according to Vogue. However, mini boots are trending now and the UGG brand is as popular as ever.
In 2011, Converse gained traction for its affordability and comfort. Maggie Kimbrough, a freshman here at Somerville High School, is a devoted Converse lover,” I live in my Converse, they are so comfy and perfect for every outfit. I own almost every color, style, and type of Converse they sell.” While the traditional converse high top is still a staple, Gen-Z has an updated platform version, popular in the Somerville halls.
