Someone once said, “As one chapter closes, another one begins.” For the Somerville football team, the end of this season might be over, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be new beginnings.
In November, Somerville High School wrapped up their 2024 football season with a bang. With an undefeated winning streak until the end, our school finished the season 12-1. They seemed almost unbeatable each week in the playoffs. Somerville crushing each team they played with touchdown after touchdown. It was truly amazing to watch each player fight for every single play, making sure that no player could get through.
But all good things have to come to an end. The final game against Mainland Regional was heartbreaking. Somerville and Mainland were tied and the game went into overtime in the last couple of minutes. SHS fans were devastated when Mainland Regional scored and won in a close 36-35 game. Although it was disappointing, it was definitely still a season to remember. We can appreciate all the senior players that played for the Somerville football team. Brenden Pacheco, Zahid Lee-Jackson, Remy Ozomgbachi, Terrell Mitchell, Jayden Loftin, Brady Scheier, Jamile Adoboe, Maximus Nuzzi, Spencer Carran, Matthew Chubenko, Sean O’Neill, Jonathan Lostocco, and Giovanni Ippolito.
They have played their final year, ending it with an amazing run. Brady Scheier, one of the senior Somerville football players, said that “although the season did not end how we wanted, we all had feelings of pride knowing that we were the first team in Somerville history to win 12 games. To win a Sectional Championship after all of the time the team put in since the summer is the definition of ‘hard work pays off.’ None of the seniors would have wanted our season to go any other way.”
As a freshman at Somerville high school and a fan of the Somerville football team, I can tell you that it was an incredible year. From being excited to go to Friday football games, to sobbing at the end of the last one, it was truly a year I will never forget.
