“V-I-L-L-E, LET’S GO VILLE!”
The fall cheerleading squad for the 2025 season is peppier than ever! With the football team kicking off their season with a bang, the cheerleaders are absorbing the thrilling energy and looking stunning on the sidelines.
This year, the Somerville cheerleading squad has put considerable time and effort into crafting their dynamic halftime routine set to a medley of pop hits including “Confident” by Demi Lovato and “Born this Way” by Lady Gaga.
Their routine explodes with a basket toss, along with three-eight counts of the cheerleaders synchronized dancing. It then moves into a stunting portion which showcases the incredible flyers’ abilities. This moves into a towering pyramid, culminating in a strong ending dance.
Coach Kelly, Coach Lee, and volunteer Coach Stephanie have put together such a fantastic routine. While watching, you can clearly see the passion and love the cheerleaders have while performing in front of a crowd.
With a very senior-heavy team, next year the squad will definitely be different. There are 13 seniors, leaving 13 underclassmen on the team. This means half of the team will unfortunately be graduating.
When asked about her last year of cheer, senior Katarina Kornas said, “I am going to miss the bonds I created with my teammates the most. All of the laughs, inside jokes and swaying together at the end of a win. I love this team so much and it’s like a second family.”
Additionally, freshman Lindsay Westcott said, “it’s kinda weird being a freshman on varsity because everyone is already so close. It’s also very stressful being on varsity because you want to be good enough to make the team again next year so the pressure is definitely there.”
“I do love it though,” she continued.
“It’s an amazing experience and very fun to be a part of. I honestly just have so much love for the sport. I love growing closer to everyone and gaining that second family, especially at the high school.”
From each of these interviews, there’s one common factor: the love they have for the team and each other.
Although the football season just began, it’ll be over in the blink of an eye.
No need to worry though, cheering in the fall isn’t the only opportunity to pick up the poms poms and show your Somerville spirit. During basketball season, varsity cheerleading will be back! Tryout dates for winter cheerleading aren’t determined yet, but keep an eye out for flyers posted around the school.
It’s YOUR turn to cheer! Become a Somerville cheerleader!
