On Easter of this year, the beloved Pope Francis died at 88 years old, leaving the world in sorrow. His humble heart, powerful words, and acts of kindness touched people of all backgrounds. As the first pope from the Americas, he broke barriers, opened hearts, and reminded the world that a person’s job in following God is to serve, not judge.
Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936. Bergoglio was born to Italian immigrants and had four younger siblings. Growing up in a working-class family, he developed strong empathy and compassion for the less fortunate and was raised to possess good virtues. He also had a passion for tango dancing.
From a young age, Bergoglio showed a strong love for God. At 16 years old, he knew he wanted to be a priest, and at 33, he was ordained one. Four years later, he was appointed head of the Jesuits, a group of Catholic priests in Argentina. His position in the church continued to rise, and in 2013, he was chosen to become the new pope after Pope Benedict XVI stepped down. He took the name Francis, after Saint Francis of Assisi, to show his love for peace, nature, and helping others. Pope Francis was known as the “People’s Pope” and for living simply and helping the poor.
Pope Francis truly cared about everyone, especially those who were impoverished and hurting. He often visited people in prisons, refugee camps, and homeless shelters. He encouraged others to be kind and forgiving, and said the Church should welcome all people. He spoke kindly about historically marginalized groups, saying, “who am I to judge?” when asked about the LGBTQ+ community. He chose to live in a simple home and often reminded others to stay humble and care for those around them. His actions made people feel seen, loved, and respected.

Pope Francis will be remembered as a humble, loving, and brave servant of God. He spoke out for the poor, defended the environment, and called for peace and unity around the world. People of all backgrounds and religions respected him because of his honesty, compassion, and courage to speak the truth with kindness. Even after his passing, the values he stood for — love, acceptance, and service — continue to inspire millions. Pope Francis truly lived as Jesus taught, and though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the hearts of many. He will forever be remembered as The People’s Pope.
