The Girl Basketball Team on a Roll
The start of spring sports means that winter sports have now ended at Somerville High School. There have been many achievements looking back at some of the sports including: basketball, wrestling, and indoor track. Starting with girls’ basketball, they ended their season with 23 wins and 6 losses. Kaylee Lauber, junior, led the team with 409 points, while also junior Amaya Miller led with 67 free throws made. Charlotte Taylor officially joined the 1,000 Point Club having made 333 points this year. Together, the whole team contributed to a huge win to be the Skyland Conference Champions for the 2nd year in a row and advanced to the semi-finals with a tough loss against Cranford. For the boys’ team, they had 19 wins and 9 losses. Senior Brady Scheier led the team with 523 points scored, following close behind, junior Tim LaCanna scored 360. In addition, the team were the 2025 Skyland Conference Valley Division Champions.
Now over to wrestling, they fought an extremely hard season with a record of 6-15. On the girls’ side, Emme Hoarle and Izabella Maldonaldo both won at the Skyland Conference Tournament in their respective weight classes. Harlee Stracuzzi and Anshul Kumar both placed second. Anshul Kumar and Emme Hoarle, both, were North II Region Champions! Also, this season, Emme earned her 100th career win! On the boys’ side, Sean O’Neill had an excellent season coming in 3rd at the Somerset County Tournament and being the District 15 Champion! Some other people who had amazing seasons were: Daniel Kornspan, Mathias Gonzalez, Cody Diamond, David Torres, Gio Ippolito, George Dalrymple, and many others.
Furthermore, in indoor track, Sophia Douglas, Nathan Vroom, and Evan Beaugris all had amazing seasons. Sophia Douglas competed in the 1600m and placed 4th at the Somerset County Relay Championships. In the 3200m, Sophia placed 8th at the Skyland Conference Indoor Championships with a time of 11:45.29 and placed 7th at the Group 2 Central Championship with a time of 11:42.16! Nathan Vroom also competed in the 3200m and placed 2nd with a time of 10:03.79, which qualified him for the Group 2 Championship where he placed 17th. Evan Beaugris competed at the Ocean Breeze Invitational and soared to an amazing first place finish with a distance of 23 feet, and then finished 2nd at the Meet of Champions with a mark of 22 feet 10 inches. Those distances qualified him for New Balance Nationals, where he placed 17th.
