Emme R. Hoarle has excelled academically, athletically, and socially in Somerville High School. She is truly an inspiring individual that has accomplished so much during her time at SHS. Serving as a mentor, friend, and classmate to so many other pioneers, she constantly strives to do good for her community.
High School Years
Growing up, Hoarle always put a strong emphasis on her academics. Throughout her younger years, she dreamed of becoming a dermatologist, but as she entered high school she discovered a love for engineering. With help from the science department and the women in STEM at SHS, Hoarle was able to explore many different academic pathways, finding her true passions.
While at SHS, Hoarle has participated in a variety of clubs and activities, including student council, National Honor Society (where she holds the corresponding secretary position), and is a varsity athlete on numerous sports teams at the high school.
When she’s not in the classroom or on the field, she loves to volunteer at the YMCA in Basking Ridge, where she works with neurodivergent children. This program allows her to encourage others to follow their athletic dreams, as well as gives Hoarle the chance to connect with new peers. She hopes to continue working with special needs individuals throughout her life and volunteer at the Special Olympics.
Somerville has so much to offer as both a town and school district. When asked what her favorite part of Somerville and SHS was Hoarle had to stop and think.
Later, she said, “the promotion of athletic achievements is really great.”
Athletes like Hoarle are constantly working to break records and win medals in their sport, so ville’s dedication to supporting those athletes and giving them a little extra acknowledgement has always meant a lot to her. Additionally, Hoarle admires how such a small community can be so supportive, provide so many extracurriculars, and promote local businesses and opportunities so well.
Sports
It’s no secret that Hoarle is an athletic machine. She has quite the impressive athletic record at SHS. Some of her achievements include the following:
- 2025 North II Region Champion (wrestling)
- 2025 Skyland conference champion (wt class 126)
- Over 100 career wins in wrestling
- 2024 group 3 high jump state champion
- SHS Triple Jump record holder
- Multiple 1st place 100 hurdles
- 1st place skyland conference relays
- Being a top scorer on the varsity girls soccer team
These are just some of Hoarle’s countless victories in sports. She discovered her love for track and field in high school, and the atmosphere and training for the sport made her instantly stick with it.
Soccer came much earlier in her life, having been a huge part of her life since she was little, when she played on various youth teams.
Wrestling, however, Hoarle fell in love with during her time at Branchburg Central Middle School. She was the only girl on her team, which made the transition to an all-girls wrestling team a little jarring.
Luckily, she was welcomed with open arms, which “really opened [her] eyes to a whole community of female wrestlers.” Hoarle plans to continue her athletic career in college, and will no doubt be just as successful there.
Moving Forward
Hoarle is fully committed to the University of Pennsylvania with a major in bioengineering and a plan to compete in the track and field program.
Being committed to an ivy league with such a difficult major can bring on a large range of emotions. Hoarle is excited to start this new chapter in her life, but sad to say goodbye to SHS. When she committed to UPenn it “lifted a lot of pressure” off her shoulders and gave a clear path to the future.
However, this commitment has also come with its own set of challenges. Hoarle mentioned feelings of imposter syndrome, and the fear of not belonging. She fears falling behind in such a large school, and doesn’t want to lose her way. This has been a wakeup call that’s reinforced her awareness of her grades. Lucky for Hoarle, she continues to excel in all aspects of high school and is set to enter this new chapter.
With so many different classes and academic opportunities, students learn so much during their time at SHS. When asked what lessons she’d take with her from SHS, Hoarle said she’ll be taking the knowledge ville’s diverse community has taught her.
During her time here, she has tried her best to involve herself with a variety of communities and cultures to learn new perspectives. She appreciates that everyone comes from different walks of life and loves to learn about others.
Emme’s Advice
“Turn to your teachers for help. You may not like them all but you’ll always have something in common with them and they want to support you”
“Use the resources you’re given.”
“Take every opportunity.”
“Working hard inside and outside of school is equally important, but make sure you have balance.”
